MONTROSE — A Montrose police officer was shot to death Saturday after responding to a domestic dispute at 16915 6450 Road at approximately 8:30 p.m. Two other officers were also shot.

Officer David Kinterknecht was shot by a man who was barricaded in a garage behind the house and later died at Montrose Memorial Hospital. Also shot and taken to the hospital were Officers Larry Witte and Rodney Ragsdale

According to the news release, city police officers and Montrose County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from the address about domestic violence in progress.

In the apparent shootout, the suspect, who was not named, died at the scene, according to the news release.

Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn said the name of the suspect isn’t being released until all his relatives are notified.

Witte and Ragsdale both had surgery for their injuries, Chinn said. White is being treated at Montrose Memorial Hospital and Ragsdale is in St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Both came through surgery well, he said, but he didn’t have official word on their conditions.

Kinterknecht, a husband and father, was a native of Montrose, went through local public schools and had been with the Montrose force for 10 years, Chinn said. Before that he was with sheriff’s offices in Montrose and San Miguel counties.

“He was in the Explorer Cadet program in the 1980s and has been part of this police department and law enforcement his whole life,” Chinn said.

The last Montrose officer killed in the line of duty was in 1983 when Reserve Officer Larry McMasters was shot when responding to a disturbance in a bar, Chinn said.

The whole department is shaken by the Kinterknecth’s death, Chinn said, and will work together to recover from losing one of their own.

“It’s going to be tough for the next few days,” he said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation along with the 7th Judicial Critical Incident Team.

never underestimate how risky it is for our policeman..

We have a bunch of people who do, always shouting abuse or racism, etc when all the officer is trying to do is get home at night..

As an example, this guy was in his garage and Gates was in his home ...and Obama called the prudent actions of the officer "stupid"

Lets support our men in blue.
