MONTROSE — Andrew Burke, a band teacher at Montrose High, who was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for sexual assault on a child by a person of trust, had been a teacher in the Montrose school district for almost eight years.

Montrose Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard said Burke was arrested in the 1900 block of White House Drive. Lillard said the victim is a 17-year-old girl, and the alleged offense took place “over time from December 2007 to August 2008.”

Burke is being held without bond at the Montrose County jail.

Montrose school district spokeswoman Linda Gann said Burke had worked for the district since August of 2001, most recently as a band teacher at Montrose High.

Gann said Burke was placed on paid administrative leave on June 3 and will remain so until the investigation by police is complete.

She said the district’s human resources department is looking through a list of licensed substitutes to take on Burke’s duties as head of the summer band camp program.

The high school holds several band camps in the summer months, Gann said, and parents and students would be informed about progress in getting the camps fully staffed.

Gann said the district would not comment further about Burke’s arrest.
