MONTROSE – If you’re worried about global warming and want to learn more about saving energy, two seminars will be offered this month at the Montrose Pavilion.

The City of Montrose will host the Colorado Sustainability Conference on June 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The next day, the Delta-Montrose Electric Association will host its Energy Forum and Expo from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both seminars are free of charge.

The city is encouraging “municipalities, school districts and community leaders” to attend the sustainability conference, which will feature personnel from the Governor’s Energy Office and other experts.

Discussed will be the state energy plan, energy performance contracting, energy efficiency and conservation block grants. Funding possibilities for sustainability projects and green workforce training will also be discussed. Other topics will include high performance school buildings in Colorado, blending historic preservation and energy efficiency and exhibitors will have displays.

The conference is sponsored by the Governor’s Energy Office, the City of Montrose and DMEA. To register, go to www.cityofmontrose.org. The conference will be followed by a tour of the historic Elks Civic Building at 5:15 p.m.

The DMEA Energy Forum and Expo on June 18 is for everyone, including the general public.

The first speaker at the DMEA forum will be Lee Boughey, senior manager for communications and public affairs at Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, who will speak on “adding power to our economy through energy efficiency, new programs and emerging technologies.”

At 10:30, three speakers, Marshall Collins of Cobble Creek Golf Community, Dean Moffatt of Sun Design Architects and Sally Kane of KVNF radio, will talk about examples of energy efficient businesses on the Western Slope.

Next, Pattie Snidow of USDA Rural Development will talk about grants, loans and other financing for business energy projects, followed by Eric Huffman of Huvco who will speak on daylighting benefits and daylighting using fiber optics.

An exhibit area will be open from noon to 6:30 p.m. with food available from vendors outside the pavilion.

Speakers in the afternoon session will address cutting-edge home lighting technologies, utility efficiency programs and rebates, the Energy Star new home program, home energy audits, tax credits for home energy efficiency, stimulus money for home energy improvements, and plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

The DMEA annual meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. following the forum. Keynote speaker will be Don Juhasz, chief of energy and utility programs for the U.S. Army.
