The body of a man found in a one-vehicle wreck far down a steep embankment near Red Mountain Pass was Thomas J. Boylan, 82, who was reported missing on Oct. 21.

State highway crews working on the road found the wreckage of Boylan’s 1990 Chevy Suburban about 10:30 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 5), said Trooper David Hall, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

The wreckage was found 389 feet below the edge of the roadway, Hall said, and described how the accident happened.

“The Surburban was traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 550 and entered a series of curves,” he said. “He failed to negotiate a left side curve and ran off the right side of the roadway and began a roll down the steep embankment.”

Boylan had been wearing a seatbelt, Hall said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A retired plumber and long-time Montrose resident who lived alone, Boylan was last seen by a neighbor when he left his driveway at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. Montrose Police have tried to find Boylan since his disappearance and put out a nationwide alert.
